Navigational Warning
- Mariners approaching the entrance to the Berg River at night are advised to be aware that
the Navigation Lights on the piers are not according to Internationally accepted Regulations.
The WHITE light at the end of the Southern Pier is difficult to discern against the backdrop of the village - and
it can be misleading because there is a GREEN light on the inshore end of the same pier. This could influence a mariner approaching from a South Westerly direction to steer between the RED and GREEN lights - which would lead directly into the pier. (Note diagram below)

- Mariners are also warned to be aware of the location of "Doctors Reef" ( half way between the Berg River entrance and Slippers Bay in the southern corner of St Helena Bay). This reef projects approx 1 nm out from the coastline, is very shallow, and because of the general lack of any swell in the bay, seldom shows any signs of turbulance. (See SAN 1008 or 117)
